It's time.
I don't need the reaper's gentle invite:
A child, just today,
had his life squeezed from him. No more than 6.
You'd think
the gods who proclaim mercy and who expect forgiveness
would also play fair.
It's time.
I don't need the friendly whisper of darkness, beckoning:
Just yesterday,
when the world
was transfixed by some political scandal,
a mother and her husband
planning a party,
crossed the road at the wrong time,
and never saw what hit them.
It's time.
I don’t need the comfort of fading nostalgia.
Another couple
married for 65 years,
had met during the war when
nothing was certain,
certain their love would last.
They stayed together
because they fought together,
And when
he sighed his last breath,
she followed soon after,
certain this was a battle she could not fight alone.
It's time.
I don't need more soothing fragments:
a 23-year-old
took his life
after being disowned for loving
someone twice his age.
He dreamed
of making it big in the movies
but his dreams were too small
to carry the weight of a broken heart.
It's time.
I don’t need the forest’s embrace:
A leech
longer than you have seen,
chases the trace of a blue earthworm.
It ends
with the worm being swallowed whole,
alive.
The leech
is later eaten by a bird
who, in turn
succumbs
to a ravenous raccoon.
The raccon
is poisoned
by an intolerant bigot whose recent promotion leads
to a night of senseless indifference.
It's time.
